Like many global observances, Valentine’s Day has deep historical roots. This celebration originates from a protective saint named Valentine, who was a member of the Catholic Church in 496 AD. The holiday was introduced as a replacement for the violent and pagan festival of Lupercalia, an ancient Roman celebration held every year at the beginning of spring. On February 15th, Romans paid respect to Faunus, the god of agriculture, and sacrificed a goat and a dog—symbols of fertility and purity, respectively. They then tore the goat’s hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood, and used them to bless women and agricultural crops.

Although many saints named Valentine appear throughout history, historians believe that the romantic aspect of today’s Valentine Day is linked to a priest who was martyred around 270 AD by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus. Different stories describe his supposed crimes; one claims that he secretly married men and women so the men could avoid going to war under the pretext of marriage, while another story describes him curing a blind girl.

It was during the 1400s that this day became associated with love. Lovers began writing messages that came to be known as “valentines.” From then on, the custom of writing love letters and poems grew increasingly popular. By the mid‑1800s, Valentine’s cards and gifts such as candies and flowers—especially red roses as symbols of love and beauty—began to be produced and widely exchanged.
