Reza, a 13‑year‑old boy from Iran, lives with cystinosis, a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the CTNS gene when both parents are carriers. It affects roughly 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 200,000 people. The disease causes abnormal buildup of the amino acid cystine in tissues and organs, particularly the kidneys and eyes.

Reza’s kidneys have suffered significant damage, requiring kidney transplantation. Despite limitations and social difficulties, Reza remains optimistic and full of life: “My parents, friends, and family always support me. I love cinema, watching movies, reading books, singing, and dancing. I really want to become an actor!”

His story, like many others, reflects hope and perseverance amid pain and financial hardship—a reminder that one day every rare disease will be recognized and cured.

Due to the rarity and complexity of these illnesses, patients and their families often face overwhelming financial and emotional burdens. Nikan Charity: A Constant Supporter of Healing

One of the seven main fields of the Nikan Mammut Charity Foundation focuses on medical and healthcare services. The organization has carried out numerous health projects, including:

  • Funding surgeries, hospitalizations, lab tests, and physiotherapy
  • Providing dental care, hearing aids, prosthetics, and wheelchairs

The Story of Mehdi

Mehdi, a hopeful 23‑year‑old, suffered severe head, neck, and spinal damage due to a rare condition. While doctors in Iran considered his recovery impossible, Acıbadem Hospital in Turkey offered a treatment plan involving neck tumor surgery and Gamma Knife therapy—a non‑invasive brain tumor procedure.

The treatment, however, was costly. Through a fundraising campaign on Nikan’s platform, 149 donors, including three anonymous philanthropists at an auto exhibition, contributed enough to cover his operations. Mehdi underwent successful surgery at Imam Ali Hospital in Tabriz, using advanced Gamma Knife technology.
