What is a Postcard?

History of Postcards

Postcards have a long history that dates back to the 18th century, when these cards were used for small and brief correspondence. The first known picture postcard was a hand-drawn design by the writer “Theodore Hooke”. He mailed the card to himself from Fulham, London, in 1840. Hooke probably did it as a joke with the postal service, as the card was a caricature of a post office worker.

The first postcards were printed in the United States on February 27, 1861 by John Chalton printing agency.

The first government copy was printed on May 1, 1871. One side of the card was used to write the message, while the other side was used to write the recipient’s information and address. When the printing industry has been developed in the 1930s and printers came into use, postcards became more sophisticated and their variety gradually increased.

History of Postcards in Iran

There is no reliable document about when postcards became popular in Iran. However, it is not far-fetched that they entered Iran after they welcomed in the West world. The first samples found was sent by Iranians living in other countries, especially Europe, to their loved ones in Iran in the second half of the 13th century AH. These cards have a postage stamp from the era of Nasser al-Din Shah and Mozaffar al-Din Shah and contain short sentences.

Over time, postcards found their way among all people, including the courtiers of the Qajar era. Nasser al-Din Shah may not have been the first Iranian to celebrate Valentine’s Day by buying one for Anis al-Dawlah, but he is certainly the first Iranian whose name is recorded in history with this title.

When Nasser al-Din Shah traveled abroad, he was impressed by the culture of giving postcards to the loved ones in Valentine’s Day, and so he decided to send a gift to Anis al-Dawla to Iran on Valentine’s Day. For this reason, he sent a postcard and a picture of a theater’s play ticket that specially designed for her. Anis al-Dawla was interested in theater so to show his love to Anis al-Dawla, he sent this card. This is the first serious appearance of postcards in Iran.

Since then, many cards have been printed that contain good news and congratulations.
